Since the year 2002 the Chinese Studies Center of the University of Salzburg in cooperation with Eurasia-Pacific Uninet (EPU) has been annually organizing the Chinese-Austrian-EU Summer School for students from the Chinese member institutions. As in previous years the 13th Chinese-Austrian EU Summer School will primarily take place in Salzburg, Vienna, Brussels and Paris from July 12th to August 8th 2014. Short trips to Bruges, Luxemburg and Amsterdam are also part of the program. In addition, there is the option of going to the Czech Republic (Prague) on demand (not included in program fees).
The Chinese-Austrian-EU Summer School is directed towards students who want to deepen their knowledge about Europe in general and Austria in particular.
Since all the lectures are held in English, having a good command of written and spoken English is a basic prerequisite for participation. Responsible contact persons from our member institutions have to make sure that the English language abilities of the selected students are meeting this minimum requirement.
NEW: From our participants we expect a one page motivation letter with the participants reasons why to join the Chinese-Austrian-EU Summer School 2014.
Program and itinerary (please find a draft for this year’s program as reference point)
The program of the Chinese-Austrian-EU Summer School includes lectures in Salzburg, Vienna, Brussels and Paris. For our lectures and exams we have a compulsory attendance. Only in case of a severe problem we can make an exception otherwise the attendance is mandatory.
In Salzburg there will be classes on Austrian literature, Austrian music, the political system in Austria, the philosophical and religious background of European culture and Austrian law. As for sightseeing, we are going to take a trip to the Lake District, to the Hellbrunn Castle, the Salzburg Fortress etc.
Furthermore, the students will attend classes on Economics and Business at the Vienna University of Economics and Business.
The program of the Chinese-Austrian-EU Summer School will also be enhanced by introductory lectures at various institutions of the European Union, namely the Permanent Representation of Austria to the EU, the European Parliament, the European Council and the European Commission. The referees from the institutions will talk about various issues such as EU-China relations, the role and functioning of the respective institution etc. While in Brussels, the students will have the opportunity to see several Belgium cities, such as Bruges and Antwerp.
For your reference, please find the program draft enclosed. This year’s program will be similar to last year’s besides the fact that the stay in Paris is extended to one week and that there will be lectures held in Paris as well. Therefor we had to cancel the trip to Venice.
Flight reservation
Flights have already been reserved with Lufthansa departing from Beijing Capital International Airport, Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Hong Kong International Airport. The Lufthansa Office in Beijing offered us a special group price. The exact fares will be told later. A deposit will be paid by us in advance. The flight fees will have to be collected by the coordinator and paid to the airline as one amount per each university.
Costs
The costs for the summer school amount to 2,200 EUR. This includes accommodation (double rooms/all including breakfast), program fees, insurance, transportation as well as the costs for the sightseeing trips. We are very sorry for raising the program fees a little but we have to cover the current inflation and the higher prices in Paris for the extended period.
The deadline for the payment of the program fees will be the 1st of May 2014. If we don´t receive the program fee from a student until the 1st of May we reserve the right to hand the spot to another student on the waiting list.
